Simple Steps to Rose Drawing

Rose Drawing Tips

Beautiful and Elegant!

Rose drawing is very popular. In fact, all flower drawings are very popular subjects in general. Flowers are very effective when they are drawn simply and cleanly. They don’t need a lot of detail to look like beautiful and elegant drawings.

Let's Begin!

Begin by observing the form of the flower in general. Typically, the eye is drawn to the center of the rose, but you want to notice the outer petals around the rose as well. These spaces between petals are small distances and many will overlap each other. These forms are tricky to see and if not drawn properly, your rose drawing will be lopsided. Be certain to use the space around the bloom to help you in understanding the overall proportions of the flower.

Delicate Petals!

As you draw, you will want to gradually work in to the bloom. So begin from the outside and work your way in adding delicate petals with delicate lines. The middle of the petal should curve away from you. You also want to be able to draw into a trailing line. Lift your pencil and begin a new line where the overlapping petal begins.

Using Pens and Pencils

Sketching with pens and pencils in a relaxed fashion can aid you in drawing in this light manner. Exaggerate line weight where you need darker shades and use small scribbly marks for the inner parts of the flower that you cannot see completely. Your drawing may look somewhat abstract, but it should still capture the subject well. Don’t forget the foliage of the flower as well.

To add color to your rose drawing you can use several different techniques. You can sketch over your pencil or pen sketch with colored pencils or even a watercolor wash. You can draw the rose with colored pencils, varying the shades to add lighting to the bloom. You can also add in pastels to create texture and interest in the drawing.
