Choose the Right Pencil
Pencil drawing is a very common type of art because you can do it just about anywhere that you go. You can go on location and draw wherever you want. You can do it in your free time at home or on the bus to work each day. Pencils are very versatile and you are able to achieve creative and realistic effects by using different types of pencils in your drawings. Main Types of Pencils! There are two main types of pencils that are used in pencil drawings. One is charcoal and the other is graphite. However, carbon pencils are also popular for different types of art as well. Many artists will incorporate both pencils in their drawings depending on their subject. Charcoal Pencils! Charcoal pencils are unique because the individual granules have an irregular shape. Light will strike these particles and bounce back to the eye at different angles. When you push hard with a charcoal pencil you are not going to have a reflective glare that you may have with graphite. This means that these pencils are great for shadows, because you don’t want your shadows to be more reflective than your subject. Charcoal pencils are excellent for drawing items such as wood, bark, hair, fur, eyelashes, the pupil of the eye, the dark line between lips, nostrils and a variety of coarse fabrics. They are also good for drawing shadows to make your pencil drawing look realistic.

Graphite Pencils! Graphite pencils are great for skin tones, glass, porcelain, shiny metal, smooth fabrics and paper objects. You can also use it for light shading such as in the whites of eyes. Carbon Pencils! Carbon pencils provide you with a warmer tone. They are excellent for using in combination with both charcoal and graphite, because they allow you to make similar objects stand out in your drawings. Consider Your Subject!
