How to Draw a Dragon

Use Your Imagination

Learning how to draw a dragon is a unique experience. Dragons are unique animals to draw. They are very popular amongst people who are into fantasy, and dragons allow you to use your imagination. They can be very expressive in their facial expressions and personality.

Start with Basic Shapes!

Dragons can be broken down into basic shapes. When you learn how to draw a dragon, you need to look at a dragon in these shapes.

The four basic parts of the dragonhead are:

  • the cheek/jaw,

  • eye ridge,

  • snout

  • neck.

Make these shapes very rounded and draw in a side view, as this is the easiest way to draw a dragon. Think of a snakehead as you draw the head of your dragon.

    Build on the Basics!

  • Build on the top of these shapes and fill in the lower jaw.

  • Split the mouth open with another line.

  • Now you can add an eye and build the eye ridge around it.

  • Next, add a small line for a nostril.

Once you have this down you can begin adding in more details.

  • Make the eyes more expressive with pupils.

  • Add an extra area of skin around the nostril to make it appear 3D.

  • Draw in teeth that hang over the lower lip.

    Flesh and Scales - YUM!

Begin adding flesh and scales to the neck. You want to add any other features such as horns and other pieces to the body so that they all blend together well. All of these little details will give your dragon personality and expression.

    A New View!

Once you have mastered the side view, you can begin drawing the dragon at different angles. Dragons are rather flexible animals so you can really make them expressive with different neck angles. The basic structure of your dragon doesn’t change, but you simply draw it from a different perspective. Once you are comfortable with the head, you can move on to learning how to draw a dragon body.
