Fashion Drawing Supplies

A Simple, Straight Forward Guide

Fashion drawing supplies are a necessity if you dream of being a fashion designer. Fashion drawing is actually very simple if you have the right supplies. Beginners will also find that it can be made much easier and stress free if you use a template to get you started. As you become more comfortable in your skills you can begin to create your own models.

You can begin by obtaining a few key fashion drawing supplies. These supplies include:

  • Layout paper
  • Templates
  • Paper glues and adhesives
  • Adhesives for fabric
  • Cartridge paper
  • Putty rubber
  • Pencils
  • Colored pencils
  • Felt pens
  • Fine drawing pens
  • Mounting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Metal ruler
  • Cutting board
  • Masking tape

    Layout paper!

The layout paper is a fine semi opaque paper that will allow you to faintly see an image underneath. This allows you to place your templates beneath it for tracing. You can also mount this paper onto firmer papers or presentation cards.

    Templates!

Templates are excellent for fashion drawing if your drawing skills are limited. You can find a variety of different poses such as strident and elegant poses that you can use to create your fashion designs around. If you are creating costumes, then you will want to take note of how the woman or man would stand for their time period. For example, a queen would be conservative and proper while a young girl from the sixties might be very liberal and exotic. Hair can also play a large roles as well as necklines and waistlines.

    Paper glues and adhesives!

Spray glues and light glue sticks are best for affixing your layout paper to heavier paper. When the layers are dry you can trim them down to size or mount them onto a card or mounting board. Avoid PVA type glues, which will wet the paper and may ruin your fashion drawing. PVA glues, Copydex and Evostick glues are suitable for sticking fabric and braids to paper, but allow the glue to become tacky so that it does not wet the fabric.

    Cartridge Paper!

Cartridge paper is great for fashion drawing because it is thick enough for light painting with watercolors and you can use bold and heavy pens on it.

    www.DickBlick.com Putty Rubber!

Putty rubber is useful because it does not rub away the background paper like an ordinary eraser will.

    Pencils & Pens!

Pencils should be soft B pencils. B or 2B pencils are good for general sketching, while 4B are great for highlights and emphasis. These pencils should be kept sharp. Colored pencils are great and allow you to blend strokes. You can also create a watercolor effect by going over them with a damp paintbrush, a welcome addition to your fashion drawing supplies. Felt pens can be used for flesh tones on the face, arms and legs. Some artists will use them all the time. Pantone felt pens are good because they do not blotch. Fine drawing pens can be used over a colored sketch instead of a pencil. They can help you show intricate detail such as embroidery.

    Mounting Boards!

Mounting boards are great for presentations. These can be used to present your work for various reasons such as at a college interview or job interview. They will allow you to present your drawings in a very professional manner. You want to aim to make your work look expensive, so go with boards that are cream, taupe, olive, gray or black.

    Craft Knife!

A sharp craft knife can be used for proper mounting. You should never use scissors to cut your mounting boards. You can use your knife to cut windows in the mounting board so that you can use your masking tape to tape the fabric samples behind the window.

    Rulers!

Metal rulers will allow you to cut straighter lines than a wooden ruler.

Once you have these basic fashion drawing supplies you are on your way to producing professional drawings and displays!
