Fulfill Your Dream of Fashion Design!

How Do I Start Fashion Design?

Don't be nervous, fulfill that dream of fashion design.

Fashion drawing and design is dedicated to the design of clothing and accessories with a certain era of time and certain functions considered. It is different from designing costumes, as costumes carry a longer life span than in-style clothing. Charles Frederick Worth was considered to be the first person to sew a label into his creations. This is when experts feel that it all started. Clothing from any time period studied by academics is viewed as costume design. However, if clothing was created after 1858 it was then considered fashion design.Fashion drawings help designers create various clothing items, and necessary, (and sometimes unnecessary), accessories.

3 Main Types of Fashion

Haute Couture!

Haute Couture simply means “Made to Measure”. It also is French for high needlework. This type of fashion dominated until approximately the 1950s. Made to measure simply reflects that a certain item was created for a specific person. However, "Haute Couture", can only be officially used by companies that meet strict criteria set by the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture. A couture piece is created for a specific individual. This creation is normally created using high-quality, expensive fabric. It is then sewn with precise attention to detail using techniques performed by hand. Cost is rarely an issue.

Ready-To-Wear!

Ready-to-wear clothes are a cross-breed of haute couture and mass market products. The fabric used, and the cut of the fabric, is chosen with great attention. These garments are produced in smaller quantities to ensure exclusivity. This also helps to guarantee that they will be expensive too. Each fashion season, (twice a year), fashion houses present their collections to a rabid, fashion hungry audience, ready to snap up the latest and greatest creations.

Mass Market!

Mass market sales are heavily relied upon by fashion designers. Standard sizes allow production of ready to wear clothes in large quantities. This provides access to a massive number of consumers. Creativity, and inexpensive materials provide affordable fashion for the masses. These types of designers follow the lead of the famous fashion names. Once they see that a style is staying, they will produce their take on these IN styles. Mass market designers generally adapt the trends set by the famous names in fashion. For cost effective reasons, less expensive fabrics and mass production procedures are used. These items must be affordable for the average consumer.
