Draw Japanese Cartoons

Anime vs Manga

Getting Started!

When learning how to draw Japanese cartoons, you need to know the difference between the two different types. There is anime and then there is manga.

Many of the conventions that are used are from Japanese legends. There are often complete stories that are re-told through animation.

Are You Serious?

If you are really serious about your anime and manga art, then you will be interested in studying more about Japanese art. The Japanese see things differently than westerners do.

What's the Difference?

Anime and manga are essentially the same, however, anime tends to be used on television shows and movies, while manga is used in print media. Manga may also tend to be more realistic looking than anime.

Manga Characteristics!

There are many characteristics that make manga very distinctive and that you can use when you draw Japanese cartoons. The most important aspect of Manga are the characters. The characters tend to have large eyes, small mouths and odd hair colors. These features tend to cause the characters to have a western look to them. Emotions are often exaggerated. So when they cry, there are buckets of tears. When they laugh you see a huge mouth and barely any eyes.

Anime Characteristics!

Anime characters are usually very deep and you may even see a flashback or two when you are watching it. This is an excellent effect that you may wish to use when you draw Japanese cartoons of your own and develop your own storylines. Anime is based on manga. The anime stories often come from the manga books themselves. There are also several different anime genres as there are manga genres.

Definitely Unique!

All anime and manga characters are very unique. When you draw Japanese cartoons you will find that the basic facial features of most characters are the same. You can make each character look different by simply changing their hair style, clothing and personal style.
