How to Draw What You See – A Simple Guide
What to Look For!
Learning how to draw what you see is a skill that you can confidently develop. Observing a subject can sometimes be challenging because we tend to make mental notes or we assume what something looks like without really studying it. There is so much information for our eyes and brains to comprehend that we only see the essentials instead of all the details.
Familiarity!
When you draw something that is familiar, it can be harder because you feel like you know it so well. The mind gets lazy and can play tricks on you as you work. To improve your skills on how to draw what you see, you can follow some simple drawing guidelines.
Drawing Guidelines!
Draw the Empty Spaces: Look at the space around what you are going to draw. Notice the space between legs and arms. Draw the space between tree limbs where you would see sky. Draw the shapes between side facial features, such as the space between the nose and lip. By drawing these negative spaces you are able to learn how to draw what you see because you are looking at the outline of the object versus the object itself.
Measure Proportions: Use the classic “thumb and pencil” method for measuring proportions. This is commonly used for drawing people, but it can be used for a variety of other objects as well. This technique can be used to measure both height and width.
Use a Grid: A grid of one-inch squares on white paper can be very useful in helping you to draw a subject. Place this card behind your drawing paper or under clear plastic. This allows you to have precise points to draw. You can also use it in conjunction with your measurements.
Look at Your Subject Upside Down: When you look at something upside down it is hard to see it for what it really is. This inversion makes you look at the object carefully and learn how to draw what you see. Draw the image upside down and it will cause you to pay more attention and keeps your mind thinking and working.
View Your Work in a Mirror:Accuracy can be difficult when you are drawing what you see. By using a mirror you see a reflection of what you drew and it may make it look unfamiliar. Any errors will be obvious to you.
